Slow Cooker Country Style Ribs: Instructions
- First, pat the country style pork ribs with a paper towel and trim out the large hard fat from the surface, keeping some of the fat intact for flavor. The purpose is to facilitate the clung sauce and keep the ribs from becoming greasy after cooking.
- Next, place the barbecue sauce and cola in a bowl and whisk to get a smooth mixture. The cola will make the sauce thinner while adding sweetness that caramelizes when the ribs are cooked.
- Now, pour a thin coating of the barbecue-cola sauce on the bottom of the slow cooker, which is between 5 and 6 quarts. Place the country style pork ribs in the slow cooker by arranging them in an even layer and overlapping the other ribs if necessary.
- Spoon the remaining barbecue-cola sauce over the ribs and turn them with tongs so that each rib piece is evenly covered with the sauce. Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on LOW setting for 7 to 8 hours, or alternatively, on HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours until the ribs are tender and the meat can easily pull apart with a fork. Avoid opening the lid too much because it will affect the consistency of the ribs’ moisture and flavor.
- After cooking, use tongs to transfer the ribs to a plate or baking sheet. Remember that the ribs will be soft and prone to falling apart. Using a spoon, skim the excess fat floating on top of the barbecue-cola sauce from the slow cooker.
- For those who prefer a sticky and gooey glaze on their ribs, spoon out the cooking sauce from the slow cooker into a saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until it becomes glossy and slightly syrupy.
- To achieve the crispy edges typical of grilled and oven-roasted ribs, preheat the broiler to high temperature and line a baking sheet with foil for convenience. Place the country-style ribs on the baking sheet in a single layer and brush liberally with some of the thickened sauce.
- Broil the ribs for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and shining, and slightly blackened around the edges. After broiling, remove the ribs from the oven and allow them to cool down for a minute. Then transfer the ribs to a serving dish or the heated but empty slow cooker. Pour more of the sauce over the ribs and serve immediately.
