Slow Cooker Amish Chicken and Dumplings: This slow cooker Amish chicken and dumplings recipe is a warm, easy dinner that feels just right for a Sunday meal. It takes its style from simple Pennsylvania Dutch home cooking, turning just a few pantry and freezer items into soft chicken, creamy gravy, and fluffy dumplings that cook right on top. It’s a great pick for busy days when you want a filling family dinner without needing to watch the stove the whole time.
Serve this meal with green beans, buttery corn, or a simple side salad to help balance out the rich flavors. Warm applesauce, cranberry sauce, or fresh fruit slices add a nice touch of sweetness too. If you’re feeding a bigger group, a basket of soft dinner rolls and a pot of hot tea make the meal feel even more complete.
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 cans (10.5 ounces each) condensed cream of chicken soup
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 1 small yellow onion, chopped into small pieces
- 1 can (16.3 ounces) refrigerated biscuit dough
Slow Cooker Amish Chicken and Dumplings: Directions
- Start the base. Place the chicken breasts flat in the bottom of a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle the chopped onion evenly over the chicken. Next, pour the cream of chicken soup and the chicken broth on top, making sure the chicken is mostly covered by the liquid. Put the lid on and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the chicken is soft enough to fall apart easily.
- Shred the chicken. Take the lid off the slow cooker. Using two forks, pull the chicken apart right there in the pot until it turns into small shredded pieces. Stir everything together well so the shredded chicken gets fully coated in the warm, creamy gravy.
- Add the dumplings. Open the can of biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into four small pieces. Drop these dough pieces evenly over the top of the hot chicken mixture. Gently press each piece down just a little so it touches the gravy underneath, but keep most of it sitting on top. Cover the slow cooker again and cook on HIGH for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, until the dumplings puff up and are cooked all the way through in the middle.
- Serve it warm. Once the dumplings are fully cooked, scoop the chicken, gravy, and dumplings together into bowls using a large spoon. Serve right away while everything is hot and steamy.
