Servings: 4-6
Ingredients
-
Drumsticks chicken 3 to 4 pounds (approximately 10-14 legs)
-
1 1/2 cups canned barbecue sauce (whichever brand)
-
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
BBQ Chicken Drumsticks: Instructions
-
Wipe the chicken drumsticks with paper towels. This makes the sauce stickier and promotes that sticky finish that is glossy.
-
Add the barbecue sauce and brown sugar into a medium bowl and stir them together until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth with a slight thickening.
-
Pour a thin coating of the bbq sauce mixture onto the top of the bottom of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. This prevents the sticking of the first layer of chicken and begins with the sauce base.
-
Place the drumsticks in the slow cooker in an even layer which is tight and add the remaining BBQ sauce mixture to the top. Toss the drumsticks using tongs to make sure that every piece is thoroughly covered with the sauce.
-
Bake at LOW 4 to 5 hours, or at HIGH 2 1/2 to 3 hours until the chicken is extremely tender, the skin is separating away from the bone, and the meat is cooked all the way (no pink around the bone).
-
When the chicken is tender, take the drumsticks using a plate carefully. Using a spoon, remove any fat that is lying on the sauce surface in the slow cooker.
-
Add the drumsticks back to the slow cooker and stir them in the thickening sauce making sure that they are completely covered and shiny. Allow them to sit on WARM 10-15 minutes to allow the sauce to cling to them to create the sticky layer.
-
To be extra sticky and caramelize (not essential, but it would be very nice with time on your side), place the drumsticks on a foil-lined baking sheet, in a single layer, brush with a little of the sauce in the slow cooker. Broil in the top rack and under close watch between 3 to 5 minutes, or until the sauce begins to boil and lightly burns in some spots.
-
Put them back in the slow cooker and pour in more sauce on top and then serve.
-
Cut the drumsticks into serving dishes and put the dish directly out of the slow cooker, topped with more sauce and leaving more napkins on the table.
