Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds cheap beef steak (like chuck, round, or flank), cut off fat and split into 4 pieces

  • 1 cup thick, sweet teriyaki sauce from a bottle

  • 1 yellow onion, sliced thin

  • 3 green onions, sliced thin (keep white and green parts apart)

Teriyaki Steak Packets: Directions

  1. Make foil packs: Rip 4 big foil sheets, each 12-14 inches. Fold edges up a bit to hold sauce.

  2. Add onions: Split yellow onion slices into 4 center piles. Sprinkle a few small pieces of green onion on top. Save green tops for later.

  3. Put on steak: Lay one steak piece on onions in each pack’s middle. For tough meat, cut light lines on top to soak up sauce.

  4. Pour sauce: Add 1/4 cup sauce on each steak. Let some drip to onions below. It gets thick and sticky when cooked.

  5. Close packs: Fold long sides together tight, then short ends. No big holes for leaks.

  6. Into cooker: Place packs flat in a 5-6 quart slow cooker. A little overlap is okay, but not stacked high.

  7. Cook: Put lid on. Low for 6-7 hours or high for 3-3 1/2 hours till steak is soft. Thin cuts done sooner.

  8. Finish up: Use tongs to lift hot packs out. Open slow—steam is hot! Add saved green onion tops on saucy steak.

  9. Serve: Eat from packs or slide to plates. Spoon extra juice over. Toss foil away.
