Steps

  1. Set up the slow cooker: Give the inside of your slow cooker a quick rub with a little butter or cooking spray so nothing sticks. Then pour in the dry 12 ounces dry elbow macaroni and spread it out.
  2. Add water and salt: Pour the 3 cups hot water right over the pasta. Add the 1 teaspoons salt (optional) if you’re using it. Give everything a stir so the macaroni is nice and wet all the way through.
  3. Drop in the butter: Scatter the chunks of 1 cups unsalted butter, cut into chunks on top of the pasta. Don’t stir yet — just let them sit on top so they can slowly melt down into everything as it cooks.
  4. Cook and stir: Put the lid on and cook on HIGH for 45 minutes. Then open it up and give it a big stir, making sure to scrape the bottom so nothing is stuck or burning down there.
  5. Add the peas: Pour in the 2 cups frozen sweet green peas and push them down into the hot pasta so they can warm up evenly. You don’t want them just sitting on top!
  6. Finish cooking: Put the lid back on and cook on HIGH for another 20 to 25 minutes. Stir it once in the middle. You’re done when the macaroni is soft, the peas are bright green, and everything looks shiny and saucy.
  7. Taste and serve: Switch the slow cooker to WARM. Give it one last stir and taste a little — add more salt if you think it needs it. Scoop it into bowls and make sure to get plenty of that buttery sauce with each serving!
