Slow Cooker Depression Era Shipwreck Stew: Shipwreck stew is one of those simple, no-fuss meals that turns a few basic pantry items into a warm, filling dinner. This slow cooker version keeps the same spirit as old Depression-era cooking — cheap ingredients, easy steps, and a thick, hearty texture that tastes like classic comfort food. It’s the kind of recipe busy families turn to when they need a supper that’s simple, reliable, and filling.
This stew tastes great with buttered bread, saltine crackers, or a light side salad to add some freshness next to the rich tomato and vegetable base. If you want to make the meal go even further, try serving it over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. On cold days, I like setting out shredded cheddar cheese, chopped parsley, and a splash of hot sauce so everyone can top their own bowl just how they like it.
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 pound raw ground beef
- 1 medium onion, sliced into thin pieces
- 3 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
- 1 can (15 ounces) vegetable soup
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, with the juice left in
Slow Cooker Depression Era Shipwreck Stew: Directions
- Prep the slow cooker. Rub a little cooking spray or oil inside your slow cooker so nothing sticks to the bottom. Spread the raw ground beef in an even layer across the bottom of the pot, breaking it apart into big chunks with your hands or a spoon rather than mixing it too much.
- Add the onion and potatoes. Scatter the thin onion slices evenly over the beef so they cover most of the surface. Then place the thin potato slices in a layer on top of the onions, spreading them out so they cook evenly.
- Pour on the soup and tomatoes. Open the can of vegetable soup and pour it evenly across the top of the potatoes, letting it spread into the gaps. Then pour the whole can of diced tomatoes, including the juice, over everything so the liquid can soak down through the layers as it cooks.
- Cover and cook. Put the lid on the slow cooker. Cook it on LOW flame about 6 to 7 hrs, or on HIGH heat for 3 and a half to 4 hours. The stew is ready when the potatoes feel soft when poked with a fork and the beef is cooked all the way through with no pink left.
- Stir and serve. Take off the lid and stir the stew gently so the beef, potatoes, soup, and tomatoes all mix together into one thick, chunky stew. Scoop it into bowls while it’s hot, and add any toppings you like, such as shredded cheese, parsley, or hot sauce, before serving.
