Sausage Gravy on Biscuits. A warm, yummy breakfast that’s easy to make and super filling! Creamy sausage gravy poured right on top of soft, fluffy biscuits — it tastes like a big cozy hug.
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 pounds ground breakfast sausage
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 0.3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2.5 cups whole milk
- 0.5 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoons black pepper
- 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
- 0.5 teaspoons onion powder
- 8 pieces biscuits (store-bought or homemade)
Sausage Gravy on Biscuits: Directions
- Cook the sausage: Put 1 pounds ground breakfast sausage in a big pan on medium heat. Use a spoon to break it into small pieces while it cooks. Keep cooking until there’s no more pink — it should look brown and crumbly. Don’t pour out all the grease! Leave about 2 spoonfuls of it in the pan because that’s what makes the gravy taste so good.
- Make the roux: Add 2 tablespoons butter to the pan and let it melt right in with the sausage. Then sprinkle in 0.3 cups all-purpose flour and stir it around really fast for about 1 to 1m 30s. This makes a thick paste called a roux (say it like ‘roo’) — it’s what helps your gravy get nice and thick!
- Add the milk: Slowly pour in 2.5 cups whole milk a little at a time, and keep stirring the whole time so no lumps form. Once all the milk is in, keep cooking and stirring until the gravy gets thick and creamy — kind of like a sauce. This takes about 5 to 6 minutes.
- Add the seasonings: Now it’s time to make it tasty! Stir in 0.5 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoons black pepper, 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder, and 0.5 teaspoons onion powder. Give it a taste and add a little more pepper if you like it extra zippy.
- Set up your biscuits: Take your 8 pieces biscuits (store-bought or homemade) and cut them in half. Lay the pieces flat on a plate — open side facing up, so the gravy has somewhere to soak in.
- Pour and serve: Scoop big spoonful of the hot sausage gravy right over the top of the biscuits. Don’t be shy — pile it on! You can also add fried eggs and roasted potatoes on the side to make it a full breakfast.
Notes
Tips for kids and beginners: Ask a grown-up to help with the hot stove! If your gravy gets too thick, just stir in a little more milk. If it’s too thin, keep cooking and stirring — it’ll thicken up. Store-bought biscuits from a can work totally fine and save a lot of time!
