2 to 2½ pounds cube steak (cut off big hard fat bits)

2 cans (10.5 oz each) cream of mushroom soup

1 packet (1 oz) dry onion soup mix

8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced thin

Cut off thick fat from steak edges. Keep the good fat inside for taste and softness.

Put sliced mushrooms in the bottom of a 5-6 quart slow cooker. They make a soft bed and flavor the gravy.

Mix mushroom soup and onion mix in a bowl till smooth. No water needed—meat and mushrooms make juice later.

Put steaks in one layer over mushrooms. Overlap a bit if you need to fit.

Pour soup mix over steaks. Spread it to cover all. They don’t need to swim in it—sauce gets wet as it cooks.
