Cube Steak with Brown Gravy Slow Cooker

Cube Steak with Brown Gravy Slow Cooker

This easy Cube Steak with Brown Gravy Slow Cooker is my go-to meal when I’m super tired but still crave a cozy, warm dinner. It takes me back to plain church meals and farm kitchens from my Midwest childhood—basic beef, yummy brown gravy, and simple stuff from the pantry that does all the work. Just put raw cube steaks in the cooker, add gravy on top, add onions and potatoes, and let it cook slow until the meat is soft and easy to cut with a fork. It’s perfect when I skip cooking but want my home to smell like a busy kitchen all day.

Serve the soft cube steaks straight from the cooker, with lots of rich brown gravy on top. They taste great with buttery egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or white bread to mop up the gravy. Add green beans, peas, or a fresh salad on the side. Offer extra black pepper, and maybe pickled beets or cucumbers like old farm tables did.

Tender cube steaks simmer in rich brown gravy with potatoes and onions for a hearty, no-fuss meal. Inspired by Midwest farm suppers, this dump-and-go recipe turns pantry basics into fork-tender comfort food. Cook low and slow for cozy flavors that fill your home with warmth—ready with zero hassle!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 to 2 pounds cube steak (about 4 pieces)

  • Use 2 small cans (10.5 ounces each) of brown gravy or gravy sauce.

  • 4 medium russet or yellow potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices

  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin

  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry onion soup mix

Cube Steak with Brown Gravy: Directions

  1. Spray or oil the inside of a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker lightly for easy cleaning later.

  2. Layer sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom, then sprinkle sliced onions over them.

  3. Place raw cube steaks in a single layer on top of the onions and potatoes. They can overlap a bit, but keep them mostly flat for even cooking.

  4. Shake dry onion soup mix evenly over the steaks.

  5. Mix condensed brown gravy with 1/2 to 1 cup water in a bowl until smooth and pourable—not too thick.

  6. Pour gravy mix over the steaks so it covers them and sinks around the veggies like a warm blanket.

  7. Put on the lid and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours, or HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until steaks are super tender and potatoes are soft when poked with a fork.

  8. Taste the gravy and add salt or pepper if you want. The soup mix and gravy are often salty enough, so check first.

  9. Serve hot with gravy, onions, and potatoes spooned over each piece.
