Classic Gravy Meatballs. Prepared this dish 40 years or more! A family favorite. My entire family asked to be given this recipe when they acquired their own place and they prepare it to their children. This is the one that can never be out of fashion!
Ingredients (Makes between 7-8 meatballs)
For the Meatballs
- 1 lb ground turkey or chicken (you may use beef instead of these)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- Half cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers.
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons generalized flour.
- 1 cup chicken or beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (squeezer) (not essential)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Classic Gravy Meatballs: Instructions
Preheat Oven
Preheat Oven: To 375degF (190degC).
Mix Meatballs
Mix Meatballs: Ground meat should be mixed in a bowl with celery, onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
Prepare Form Meatballs
Prepare Form Meatballs: Roll mixture into medium sized meat balls ( 1.5 inches each), and lay on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Bake
Bake: Bake at 20-25 minutes and cook until meatballs are brown and cooked.
Make Gravy
Make Gravy:
- Melt butter in medium heat in a saucepan.
- Add flour and cook 1- 2 minutes until slightly golden.
- Add broth gradually until smooth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce (use optional), and salt and pepper. Cook till consistency leads to thickening, 3-5 minutes.
Blend
Blend: Add gravy to baked meatballs either in a serving dish or in the pan.
Serve
Serve: Hot, with potatoes mashed, or rice, or noodles.
