Beef and Turnip Stew Slow Cooker. A Super Simple Dinner That Makes Itself

When you’re tired after a long day and have no idea what to cook, this is the meal that saves you. You just throw five easy things into your slow cooker, turn it on, and hours later you have a warm, cozy dinner ready to eat. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel happy and full. No fancy cooking skills needed—just put stuff in a pot and let it do the work for you!

What You Need

  • 2 pounds of beef stew meat (cut into small chunks about the size of dice)
  • 1 1/2 pounds of turnips (peeled and cut into small cubes)
  • 2 cups of beef broth (the kind in a can or box)
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes with the juice (about 14 ounces)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt (or use 1 teaspoon if you have table salt)

How to Make Beef and Turnip Stew Slow Cooker

  1. Put all your beef pieces on the bottom of your slow cooker in one even layer. Don’t pile them all on top of each other—spread them out so they can cook the same on all sides.
  2. Sprinkle all your turnip chunks on top of the beef. Make a nice, even blanket of turnips covering the meat. This helps them get soft and soak up all the yummy flavors.
  3. Pour the beef broth over everything. Then open your can of tomatoes and pour the whole thing (tomatoes and juice!) into the slow cooker. Use a spoon to spread it around gently.
  4. Shake the salt all over the top of everything. Don’t mix it up yet—let those layers stay put.
  5. Put the lid on and let it cook. Use the LOW setting for 7 to 8 hours, or the HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours. The beef should be super soft and the turnips should break apart easy with a fork when it’s done.
  6. Gently stir everything together to mix all the layers. Take a little taste and add a tiny bit more salt if you want.
  7. Pour your stew into bowls and enjoy! If you like your stew thicker, you can mash a few turnip pieces against the side of the pot and mix them back in before serving.
