Depression Era Shipwreck Stew In Slow Cooker. This stew is a simple, comforting meal that uses few, cheap ingredients and makes a warm dinner for the family. It cooks slowly so flavors mix together, and it reminds me of old-time meals that were easy to make and filling.
A hearty, old-fashioned slow cooker stew made with ground beef, onions, potatoes, canned vegetable soup, and tomatoes. Easy to prepare and cheap to feed a family, it cooks all day for a soft, spoonable comfort meal. Serve with bread, crackers, or over rice for a warm, filling dinner.
Ingredients
1 pound raw ground beef
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
3 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 can (15 ounces) vegetable soup
1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
Depression Era Shipwreck Stew: Directions
Lightly grease the inside of a slow cooker. Place the raw ground beef in the bottom and break it into big pieces with a spoon.
Put the sliced onion over the beef in an even layer.
Add the sliced potatoes on top of the onions.
Pour the vegetable soup evenly over the potatoes.
Pour the diced tomatoes with their juice on top of everything.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or on HIGH for 3 1/2 to 4 hours, until the potatoes are soft and the beef is cooked through.
Stir gently before serving to mix the beef, potatoes, soup, and tomatoes together. Ladle into bowls and serve hot.
