Servings: 6
Ingredients
-
1 pound ground beef (the lean kind)
-
1 large yellow onion, cut up (about 1 1/2 cups)
-
2 cups white long-grain rice, washed well
-
2 cans tomato soup (10.5 oz each)
-
2 1/2 cups water
-
1 teaspoon salt (use less if you want)
-
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (use less if you want)
Texas Hash Slow Cooker: Directions
-
Heat a big pan on medium-high heat. Cook the beef, stirring to break it into bits, until it’s all brown with no pink left. Drain most fat if there’s too much, but keep some for flavor.
-
Mix in the chopped onion. Cook and stir 3-5 minutes until it’s soft and clear. Turn off the heat.
-
Oil the inside of a 4-6 quart slow cooker lightly.
-
Spread the clean rice flat on the bottom.
-
In a bowl, stir tomato soup, water, salt, and pepper until smooth.
-
Pour the soup mix over the rice. Stir softly so every rice grain gets wet.
-
Add the beef and onion on top. Mix lightly—don’t smash the rice.
-
Cover with lid. Cook it on LOW flame for 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hrs. Rice should be soft and most liquid gone. Skip checking for the first 3 hours!
-
Stir from the bottom to make rice fluffy. Try it and add a little more salt or pepper if you want. Eat it while it is hot!
-
Scoop straight from the cooker with salad, veggies, or bread. Add cheese, spicy sauce, or sour cream to make it extra fun.
