It’s the kind of meal that makes everyone smile and ask for more. Best of all, it’s really easy to make — even if you’re just learning to cook!

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 5 pieces large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 3 tablespoons butter (for potatoes)
  • 0.5 cups warm milk
  • 1 pinch salt (for potatoes)
  • 17.9 ounces ground beef
  • 1 pieces small onion, chopped into tiny pieces
  • 2 pieces garlic cloves, chopped up small
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil (for beef)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 pinch salt and black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons paprika (you can skip this if you want)

Ground Beef and Gravy Making Steps

  1. Boil the potatoes: Put your 5 pieces large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks into a big pot. Fill it with water and add a little 1 pinch salt (for potatoes). Cook on the stove until the potatoes are really soft — you should be able to poke them easily with a fork.
  2. Mash the potatoes: Pour out the water, then mash the soft potatoes with 3 tablespoons butter (for potatoes) and 0.5 cups warm milk until they are smooth and creamy. No lumps! Put a lid on the pot to keep them warm while you make the beef.
  3. Cook the beef and onion: Put a big pan on the stove on medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons butter or oil (for beef) and let it get warm. Then put in 17.9 ounces ground beef and 1 pieces small onion, chopped into tiny pieces. Stir and break up the beef as it cooks until it turns brown all over and the onion gets soft.
  4. Add the garlic: Toss in the 2 pieces garlic cloves, chopped up small and stir everything together. Let it cook for just about 30 seconds — it will smell really good!
  5. Make the gravy: Add 2 tablespoons butter or oil (for beef) and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour right into the pan with the beef. Mix it well and cook it for one more minute. Then slowly pour in the 2 cups beef broth, a little at a time, while you keep stirring so it doesn’t get lumpy.
  6. Season and simmer: Sprinkle in 1 pinch salt and black pepper and 0.5 teaspoons paprika (you can skip this if you want) to make it taste great. Turn the heat down a little and let the gravy bubble gently until it gets nice and thick.
  7. Serve and enjoy!: Scoop a big spoonful of your creamy mashed potatoes onto a plate. Then spoon the warm, thick beef gravy right on top. Eat it while it’s hot — yum!

Notes

💡 Tips: If your gravy gets too thick, just add a tiny bit more beef broth and stir. You can also add frozen peas or corn to the beef for extra veggies!
