Ingredients

  • 1 small cabbage, chopped

  • 450 g (1 lb) ground beef

  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) of diced tomatoes

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 250 ml (1 cup) beef stock

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Cabbage and ground beef: Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat until it is warm.

  2. Add the ground beef and cook 5–6 minutes, breaking it into pieces, until browned.

  3. Pour off the extra grease, then add the cooked beef to the crockpot. Browning first makes it tastier but is not required.

  4. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the slow cooker.

  5. Place the chopped cabbage on top of the beef and onions.

  6. Pour in the diced tomatoes and beef stock.

  7. Sprinkle smoked paprika, chilli flakes (if you like), dried oregano, salt, and pepper over everything.

  8. Stir gently so the cabbage is covered in the sauce.

  9. Cover and cook on low for 5–6 hours or on high for 2½–3 hours, until the cabbage is soft.

  10. Stir once or twice while it cooks if you can, then taste and add more salt or pepper if needed.

  11. Serve hot alone, or with bread or rice.
