Servings: 4-6

Ingredients

  • 12 oz uncooked wide egg noodles

  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) condensed French onion soup

  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream

  • 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese or mozzarella cheese, packed lightly in the cup.

Amish French Onion Noodles: Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch dish with butter or spray so noodles won’t stick.

  2. Spread uncooked noodles evenly in the dish. Shake it a bit for a flat layer so they cook the same.

  3. In a bowl, mix onion soup and sour cream till smooth. It stays a bit runny to soak the noodles.

  4. Pour mix over noodles. Cover them well. Press noodles down gently with a spoon so they get wet.

  5. Sprinkle cheese on top loosely. Let it sit even so it melts nice.

  6. Cover tight with foil to keep steam in. This makes noodles soft.

  7. Bake covered for 35-40 minutes. Noodles should be soft when poked with a fork, and sauce bubbly.

  8. Take off foil (watch hot steam!). Bake uncovered 10-15 more minutes till top is golden.

  9. Let sit 5-10 minutes. Sauce gets thicker and easy to serve.

  10. Scoop onto plates with some sauce. Serve hot.

Serve with green salad or steamed beans to cut the richness. Try buttered peas or roasted carrots for farm style. Goes great with chicken, meatloaf, or pork chops. Or eat alone with bread to mop up sauce. Add iced tea or milk like at Grandma’s.
