Ingredients

For the meatloaf:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground pork

  • 1 small onion, chopped up very small

  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped fine

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme

For the brown gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Southern Meatloaf Making Steps

  1. Heat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grab a big bowl. Put in the ground beef, ground pork, tiny chopped onion, chopped garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Mix with your hands or a spoon until it sticks together. Don’t mix too much!

  2. Make the meat mix into a big loaf shape. Put it in a baking dish or loaf pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes. It’s done when it’s cooked all the way through and brown on top.

  3. While the meatloaf bakes, make the gravy. Put butter in a pan on medium heat until it melts. Add flour and stir for 1 to 2 minutes until it turns light brown.

  4. Slowly whisk in the beef broth. Add Worcestershire sauce. Keep stirring and let it bubble until it gets thick like gravy. Add salt and pepper to make it taste just right.

  5. Cut the meatloaf into slices. Serve it with mashed potatoes. Pour lots of warm gravy on top!
