Championship Beef Dip Slow Cooker: Directions
-
Brown beef: Place the ground beef in a large skillet and turn the heat to medium-high, using a spoon to break the meat into small crumbles, until it is no longer pink and it is only slightly browned at the edges, 6-8 minutes. When it contains too much fat drive most of it off, and leave a tablespoon or so to add flavor.
-
Layer in slow cooker: Put the cooked ground beef into the slow cooker and spread it out so it lays flat and even. Add the dry au jus gravy mix on top.
-
Add the soup: Add the condensed French onion soup to mix with the beef and au jus mix. It is not necessary to water down the soup with some more water and the slow cooker will produce sufficient steam and the concentrated base will provide a more desirable dipping jus.
-
Low and slow cooking: Put on a cover and cook in LOW setting 4-6 hours, or in HIGH setting 2-3 hours until the contents are hot, bubbly and the flavors have mixed. Stir once or twice while cooking of clumps and make sure that the seasoning is evenly spread.
-
Toast the rolls: Approximately 10 minutes prior to serving, cut the hoagie rolls in half, and toast them without laying the broiler or a hot oven until only slightly crisp along the edges. This assists them in rising up against the pliant filling and dipping.
-
Prepare the sandwiches: Spread the hot beef onto the toasted rolls in a slotted spoon, and allow the extra liquid to drip back in the slow cooker. Dip small bowls of the cooking liquid.
-
Serve: Carnation serve the sandwiches, hot gravy on the side. Ask diners to liberalize the dipping, that is the contrast between the crispy bread, the savory beef and hot broth is the entire idea in a good beef dip.
