Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage

Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage is a simple sausage and cabbage supper I have never known my uncle to miss in the middle of winter. He is a well-behaved Midwestern farm boy, and he prefers food that is cheap, nutritious, and does not have him chained to the stove. This slow cooker dish uses only four ingredients, but you will think you cooked all day on it. The smoked sausage flavors the cabbage and potato and all cooks up into a warm, comforting, brothy one-pot meal that will keep you warm until the last on a cold weeknight.

Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage

Ingredients

  • Sausage or kielbasa, which is smoked, cut into 1/2-inch rounds.

    • Quantity: 1 pound and 1/2

    • Notes: Lay the sausage, which has been cut into slices on the cabbage in a uniform layer. The sausage will grill a little towards the edges and its juices will drip down, coating the vegetables.

  • Green cabbage (approximately 2 pounds) cored and cut into shreds or wedges of thick cabbage.

    • Quantity: 1 small head

    • Notes: Add the cabbage evenly on the potatoes. It will appear a lot, yet it reduces to tender, clear-like strands during the process of simmer.

  • Yellow potatoes, peeled (or not) and chopped into large portions.

    • Quantity: 2 pounds

    • Notes: Potatoes Layer the potatoes on the bottom of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. This is their time to have ample time near to the heat hence become soft and creamy and do not fall apart.

  • Low sodium chicken stock.

    • Quantity: 2 cups

    • Notes: Add the chicken broth to all the items in the slow cooker. It does not matter that the liquid will not overlap the ingredients fully. Once the cabbage starts to leak its juices it will make abundant savory broth.

Directions

Layer Potatoes

Potatoes Layer the potatoes on the bottom of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. This is their time to have ample time near to the heat hence become soft and creamy and do not fall apart.

Add Cabbage

Add the cabbage evenly on the potatoes. It will appear a lot, yet it reduces to tender, clear-like strands during the process of simmer.

Prepare Sausage

Lay the sausage, which has been cut into slices on the cabbage in a uniform layer. The sausage will grill a little towards the edges and its juices will drip down, coating the vegetables.

Pour Broth

Add the chicken broth to all the items in the slow cooker. It does not matter that the liquid will not overlap the ingredients fully. Once the cabbage starts to leak its juices it will make abundant savory broth.

Bake

Question mark and bake on LOW 6-8 hours, or on HIGH, 3-4 hours, until the potatoes are exceptionally soft and the cabbage is tender and transparent. The sausage must be warmed out and burned a little on some of the sides.

Stir

When cooked stir at the bottom until the sausage, cabbage and potatoes are mixed together but do not mash the potatoes excessively. Add a sprinkle of salt and black pepper on the table and taste.

Serve

Transfer the sausage, cabbage and the potatoes in bowls, ensuring that each portion receives some of the delicious broth at the bottom of the slow cooker. Serve hot.
